READING GROUP GUIDE Questions and topics for discussion
1. As Warren and Lily traveled through the Region
of Neither Norr, Lily began to notice strange behavior amongst the
Oidenoids. What were they doing that was peculiar? And why were they doing
it?
2. Outside the tunnel with the drooping magma,
one of the Oidenoids, Ebnetter, hunted down and killed a wild animal. What
was the animal, and what does Ebnetter’s action say about him? What does
it say about the Oidenoids in general?
3. The Harvesters used which test to figure out
if a creature was an Oidenoid? Later, after Orskin, Fiske and Mishkin
Hobble killed the Oidenoid Obbman, what did they do with the body, and
what had the humans been told they would do? How did this make you feel
about the Harvesters?
4. The residents of Outer Nuldoid were said to
tick a little differently. What was unusual about their world that made
them experience life in a different way, and why?
5. As the humans entered Downtown Nuldoid, they
looked up and saw the opposite side of the city. Why was that? And what didn’t they see when they looked there?
6. What are Sloidelobbs? What jobs did they
perform and why? What caused the Sloidelobb’s head to explode in the
elevator to the Cathedral of the Wheel?
Why did some Sloidelobbs appear to be nice?
7. The Crystal Recovery and Preparation team
seemed not to be particularly good at their job, nor were their vehicles
in very good running order. Why was that? (It has to do with how often
they’re called upon to work.)
8. Why was it difficult for Emperor Ed to get his
subordinates at the sewage treatment plant to do anything? How did he come
to terms with this dichotomy?
9. What was a Delnoid, and why were they so much
better at performing magic than regular Nuldoids? How did most Delnoids
spend their lives? Why was Fiske so different from other Delnoids?
10. Why did Leo believe that he should go into the
machinery to fix the cracked pinion wheel?
11. Where did the Council of Elders meet? What
type of cases did they hear? Who headed the Council? What did the Council
disagree about, or, rather, whom did they disagree about? And what
did that disagreement cause him to do?

Nuldoidians look down on them?
13. What made the children realize that they’d see
